General Information for Pre-K Families
BNS pre-K will be part of the DOE citywide pre-K placement process which begins in March. Check the DOE website for information about the citywide pre-K placement process at schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/PreK/default.htm
Pre-K families are encouraged to attend an open house (see below). Pre-K families should apply to BNS through the DOE pre-K placement process online or on paper, available at schools. Pre-K families should also fill out a BNS information sheet.
General Information for K - 5 Admissions
Children are admitted to BNS by lottery. There is no entrance test and no pre-admission interview. Parents are asked to fill out a simple one page application. There are five open house dates scheduled for this fall and winter (see below). Parents are urged to attend an open house before they apply. BNS is not a zoned school; children who live in Brooklyn are eligible to apply.
Lottery and Notification Information
The BNS lottery will take place by the end of March, 2010. We do a separate lottery for each grade, K - 5, and we maintain a separate wait list for each grade.
Notification letters will be sent out the beginning of April to all families who apply before the lottery deadline of March 12, 2010. Applications received after March 12, 2010, will go to the wait list.
Notification letters will ask for a response: either to an offer of a seat for your child or to an offer to be added to the wait list. If you receive an offer of a seat, please respond by phone or email as soon as possible. If you receive the wait list letter, please send back the tear-off at the bottom if you would like to be added to the wait list. You can mail, fax or bring it to BNS.
The BNS Admissions Process
Open Houses are for all grades, pre-K - 5, and include a tour of the school.
- Open Houses begin in the Auditorium and last 1 1/2 hours. We have one evening open house in March (see below).
- Parents DO NOT need to register or sign up.
- We encourage parents to come to an Open House before they apply to BNS.
Applications and pre-K information sheets will be available starting November 17, 2009, at the first open house.
- Applications/information sheets are also available in the main office, room 206, from 8 am -3 pm.
- No additional material is necessary for the application.
- If you applied for the current school year, you must fill out a new application for the 2010 - 2011 school year.
- Applications are only available at BNS; we cannot mail, fax or email them.
All children in grades K - 5 are admitted by BNS Lottery.
- There is a lottery for each grade, K - 5, and a wait list for each grade.
- BNS recognizes sibling preference for our own students and students of the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies, our sister secondary school.
- This year's lottery deadline is March 12, 2010. Applications received after March 12, 2010 will go to the wait list.

- Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at 9 am
- Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at 9 am
